about

Ngawang fled artistic and religious oppression in Tibet in order to write and sing and the songs he always dreamt of being able to perform freely. “Gratitude” – his debut single - was written as a tribute to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The song was first broadcast by Radio 3’s Introducing World Music scheme and will be familiar to those who saw Nagawang perform at WOMAD 2015.

“It was an amazing honour to perform for His Holiness at the O2 in London this September. My song ‘Gratitude’ was written to thank His Holiness for dedicating his life to peace and non violence & for being such an inspiration to so many people around the world”

English translation

Verse 1
The white snow lion of the land of snow
Embodiment of (Songtsen, Trisong, and Tridral) the three ancestral dharma Rajas,
Deity of crimson-faced Tibetans
May you, the white snow lion, live forever

Chorus
Thank you
Thank you
With palm folded, we say you have been most kind

Verse 2
From Tibet, the realm of Avalokiteshvara,
With heart embodying love and compassion and a mind clear like the sun
Your light has spread in all directions
May you the protector, Tenzin Gyatso, live forever

Chorus
Thank you
Thank you
With palm folded, we say you have been most kind

Verse 3
Champion of peace, respected across the world
From London, the capital city of Great Britain
On the occasion of your birthday, in unison, we sing a song of joy

Chorus
Thank you
Thank you
With palm folded, we say you have been most kind

about

Ngawang Lodup London, UK

Ngawang comes from long line of well-known folk singers from the Amdo region of Tibet – a beautiful but harsh environment high on the north-eastern corner of the Tibetan Plateau known for fine horses, wild grasslands and nomadic culture.

Escaping repression in Chinese occupied Tibet, Ngawang trekked 250 miles across the Himalayas over 18 days to Nepal before finally settling in the UK in 2004.

The roar of the rumbling Dragon
Erupts south of the Magyal Mountain
A good omen of the forthcoming rain
